Ok, so one of the downsides about using your mobile phone for driving directions is that it can't have a comprehensive set of maps stored like a regular GPS unit would. How about some sort of external hard drive you can hook into? It would like you have extra movies, map data, whatever. That way you can pre-load a lot at home before you get on the road.
Personally, I'd want to be able to use my phone to download over Wi-Fi, but I have no desire to pay to download over the EDGE/3G/4G network.

Yeah they should make it solid state preferably, and if possible, very small. Small enough to actually fit inside the phone. They could call it something like, I don't know... an "SD" card or something?
When I went overseas, I took my Nokia E66 with Nokia Maps with me. While this isn't the best software in the world, before I left I could download all the maps onto my phone so I wouldn't use expensive 3G data services.
Maps for the entire planet(!) was about 4GB of storage, so I bought a 16GB microSD card for my phone, put all the maps on it, a local copy of wikipedia, and some music and I was sorted. :)
